For the Community

The Global Sport Fund (GSF) has a long-term commitment to communities to provide opportunities for youth to engage in sport as a means to prevent drug use and juvenile delinquency. To advance that process the GSF seeks to build steady partnerships with well established community-based non-governmental and national organizations that are involved in youth-in-sport activities for adolescents between the ages of 11 and 18 years. It is through these organizations that the programme will reach young people in their own communities via the services of skilled coaches and mentors. Only through local ownership of the intervention process by local stakeholders can meaningful sustainability be attained.

NGO grants

The Fund provides small grants to finance projects from NGOs that meet the criteria and requirements set out in the Grant Programme Guidelines and the Grant Application form. Three important perquisites are to be met by any NGO interested in applying for grants and these are:

  • Nationals exercise majority control over the NGO's operations and can vouch for its financial viability.
  • Valid and continuous accreditation or registration of the NGO with governmental authorities for at least 24 months of operations.
  • Proven accomplishment in youth-in-sport activities (with a drug or crime prevention slant) for at least two uninterrupted years immediately preceding the submission of the application.

Submissions are encouraged from qualified NGOs in Africa, Asia, Pacific and Oceania, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Central Europe regions. Should information be difficult to download, send enquiries to: gsf@undoc.org.

Training material

Design of project proposals must take into account the objective and mission of the GSF. In this regards, NGOs are welcome to download instructional material that can be modified to design training programmes for youngsters that offer prevention in terms of drug use and crime: http://www.unodc.org/pdf/youthnet/handbook_sport_english.pdf. This document is 56 pages long and a word.doc format will soon be available.

There is even something for coaches and mentors that enables them to present the "Fair Play" module, which is a corner stone of the GSF philosophy: www.unodc.org/pdf/youthnet/action/alternatives/coachesguide_E.DOC . As this document is still under development, we would welcome contributions and knowledge sharing from users who have had some practical successes, both on the field and in the classroom.

National organizations

The Fund also seeks partnerships with national sports bodies, associations and organizations, which run programmes for youth within the above-mentioned target age range. As the programmes of national entities depend on the success of community-level engagement of youth, the GSF sees the need for NGOs delivering grant funded projects to coordinate activities closely with national organizations.

For the hosting of youth camps, the GSF will work directly with national organizations of candidate countries that opt to submit no-cost bids for staging such events. Full details on arrangements for up-coming camps are to be published on this website at a later date.
