Wilfried Lemke sends best wishes to GSF Youth Camp in Poland

22 July 2009

Mr. Wilfried Lemke, Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace sends his best wishes and congratulations for the Global Sport Fund International Youth Camp taking place in Spala, Poland.

Wilfried Lemke
In my capacity, I send you my congratulations and best wishes for the International Youth Camp.

You come from fourteen different countries: from Albania, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, Montenegro, Poland, Qatar, Slovenia and Ukraine. While you all speak different dialects and come from diverse cultures and backgrounds, you will discover that when you are on the sports field, you all speak the same language, a universal language that is the language of sport.

By participating in the Global Sport Fund's Youth Camp you are contributing to the efforts of the United Nations to create world peace. You are showing to the world that you are willing to contribute to the breaking down of barriers and to learn about the positive values of sport: team play, tolerance, and respect for opponents, regardless of ethnic, cultural, religious or other differences.

You will learn the importance of values such as honesty, discipline, fair play, respect for oneself and others and adherence to the rules. You will learn that even if you win or lose, you must be humble and show respect to your team mates and your competitors. Playing as a team will set the basis for a friendship, a friendship which goes beyond this Youth Camp, a friendship created through sport.

Whatever you learn in Spała, you must share with others. You have the responsibility to be role models within your families, schools and communities. As 'GSF Youth Ambassadors' and 'GSF Coach Ambassadors', you will have new responsibilities because you will have the power to help others.

In that spirit, I wish that you all enjoy the Youth Camp and I join with you in the "global handshake of friendship."
